Discover Chanel’s New Cruise Collection Shown in L.A.
The time has come for the Chanel Cruise 2023/24 collection to unfold the multiple facets of its colourful, joyful and elegant world.
On Tuesday night, Chanel brought its 2023/2024 Cruise collection to town in a celebration of Hollywood and all that includes, marking the first time the luxury French fashion house has shown there since 2007. Coinciding with the opening of its largest U.S. boutique in Beverly Hills, Chanel revealed that its new collection is “an ode to the City of Angels,” highlighting founder Gabrielle Chanel’s legacy of dressing Hollywood movie stars since the 1920s.
Instead of the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Chanel opted for the quintessential Los Angeles site, Paramount Studios, as the starting point for its Cruise 2024 collection. The collection was a brilliant parade of the soft power of Los Angeles. Once inside guests were met with a carnival atmosphere; an interlocking C-court basketball court, Chanel-branded food trucks and a fun “kiss cam” that captured the main guest faces: Margot Robbie, Kristen Stewart, Snoop Dogg, Lil Nas X, and Paris Hilton. During the set, dominated by a large movie screen, models walked the runway, while the film’s backdrop showed the Los Angeles skyline and beach before Alma Jodorowsky’s feature film appeared. It was a combination of cool aesthetics with a touch of the best high-end charm. Chanel’s Cruise show brought shimmering moments to the runway with sombre accents, bubblegum tones and classic sparkle.
“Between a tribute to the glamour of the great movie stars and evoking the fun world of aerobics, sports and roller skating, between the dream on the one hand and what you want to wear on the other, it’s all about balance,” says Virginie Viard.
These rhinestone-covered mini-shorts and jumpsuits, embroidered bustiers and sleeveless tops, 30’s style shoes and disco variations, crossover blouses, leg warmers, aerobics inspired outfits, all reminded us of that 80’s glow. But not only was their inspiration from that era, but the collection also embraced the rhythmic pulse of bygone eras, from the opulence of the 1920s and the magnetic allure of the 1930s to the wonderful rhythms that resonated through the vibrant 1970s and the electrifying 1980s, the decades emerged in a dazzling symphony, both in garments and hues. Cleverly orchestrated colour explosions combined timeless house tones, pastels and bold new hues. Beyond the timeless realms of black and white and a kaleidoscope of pinks, shimmering gold evoked the happy days of cinema.
The runway also saw a variety of mixes with coastal and ombre tones, some abstract watercolour prints of skaters and billboard graphics embodying Virginie Viard’s fresh and cheerful vision of California. Cruise’s show also featured a sporty spirit with an athletic approach to fashion, with metallic kites and embroidered details of pearls, sequins and crystals, black and white silhouettes will always be a classic.
And where Chanel lands, celebrities show up. Celebrating the stars of the big screen, Chanel invited top A-list stars of the moment, such as Margot Robbie, Riley Keough, Lucy Boynton and Rose Byrne, to embody Chanel’s vision on the front row. Recent Chanel bride Sofia Richie Grainge was also in attendance with her husband, as were music heavyweights like Nike Rogers and Kim Petras.
Sofia Richie made an appearance, arriving on the arm of her new husband, Elliot Grainge. Just before the debut of the Chanel Cruise 2024 collection, she posted a “GRWM for the Chanel Cruise Show,” which revealed her head-to-toe look for the event, starting with a feather-lined blazer dress and finishing with a classic pair of heels.
