Tom Ford Brings Glamour Back To New York With SS23 Runway Show
From models to the front row and, of course, the fashion highlights from Tom Ford SS’23.
On the final day of New York Fashion Week, Tom Ford’s Spring/Summer 2023 Womenswear and Menswear runway show presented the crowd with the golden glamour of the 1980s. As expected, there was plenty of glamour on the runway, adding to the glitz and sparkle to close New York Fashion Week with a bang.
From sporty shorts to bright tracksuits to pastel western fringed jackets and quilted leather jackets for men, the rich ’80s aesthetic was palpable in every piece. Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” played as Liberace-style shorts and crystal waterfall jackets made their debut. Of course, Ford also showed the demurer side of the brand, with soft-cut men’s suits here and a silky ensemble there. Some striking moments felt particularly referential not just to the Tom Ford brand, but to Ford’s overall body of work when he worked at Gucci; take, for example, the lacy lingerie and thongs paired with oversized crocodile-like leather jackets.
Sheer lace lingerie became daywear alongside leather, metallic and gold pants and dresses. The last section was designed exclusively for the after party or celebrations.
The glamorous fashion show also brought together a formidable front row with celebrities such as Madonna, Erykah Badu, Nicole Richie Ciara, Lori Harvery and Chris Rock. And of course, the Hadid sisters closed the show in jeweled sequin dresses paired with sequin earrings.
Men’s fashion was a bit quieter, albeit with a bold interpretation. Conventional black was joined with a nod to Valentino’s hot pink, as archetypal suits were enhanced with sleek lines, subdued patterns and the occasional metallic fabric. Textures were meticulously used throughout the collection with shiny leather, delicate embroidery and an abundance of sequins to add movement and glamour to the vintage-inspired silhouettes.
The models’ hair was wavy, exaggerated and sky-high. In addition, the brand also took inspiration from the 1980s, which paired nicely with the maximalist vibe of today’s fashion.
Also, among the sea of bold colors and shimmering sequins, was the bold use of animal prints, a true ’80s fashion statement. Even with the eclectic nature of the collection, the launch did not stray too far from the designer’s signature pieces and the usual design staples, such as the classic Tom Ford tuxedo.
