Mugler’s Spring-Summer 2022 Collection
Creative Director Casey Cadwallader takes us on a Hollywood-inspired journey through time and space with muses Chloe Sevigny, Megan Thee Stallion, Bella Hadid and +.
The latest See-Now-Buy-Now Spring/Summer 2022 collection is the third instalment in the house’s “trilogy” series directed by Torso Solutions and designed by Haley Wollens.
Mugler’s Spring/Summer 2022 season marks Casey Cadwallader’s first collection since the house’s founder, Manfred Thierry Mugler, passed away in January of this year.
The team turned to beloved Mugler muses and some new faces to christen the new collection. Icons like Dominique Jackson, Megan Thee Stallion, Chloë Sevigny, Bella Hadid, Shalom Harlow and Amber Valletta strut through the faux streets of New York on a Los Angeles set.
Throughout his time as creative director of Mugler, Casey Cadwallader has become a go-to designer for pop stars, with everyone from Dua Lipa to Cardi B eager to get their hands on his illusion catsuits. Last week, the American fashion designer stepped in to co-direct the Plan B music video for Megan Thee Stallion’s hypnotic new single.
The film introduces Megan Thee Stallion, Mugler’s muse of the moment. Most of the short film takes place in a Hollywood setting that skewers the East Coast and West Coast as a nod to Cadwallader’s American roots.
The film is an action-packed duel for the camera’s attention, as Chloë Sevigny makes her way through the streets of New York, Bella Hadid turns the hood of a shiny limousine into her catwalk, prima ballerina Maria Kochetkova and superstar Barbie Swaee engage in an elegant, contrasting sequence of dance styles inspired by the fascinating duality of the house’s legacy.
Cadwallader, one of the leading proponents of near-nude dressing in recent seasons, now pared down tuxedo jackets to shoulder lengths and hanging lapels and filled his slim-fitting pants, dresses and skirts with as many daring cuts as possible.
The collection explores the elegance of form and plays with transparency, all in the spirit of ’90s modernism. Inclusivity is at the heart of the Mugler brand: clothes designed for all body types but always for the brave girl.
The brand also plays with the concept of asymmetry, new dégradé ‘Hoochie’ dresses, challenging the viewer with unexpected patterns and colours. Cut-out bodies and corsets are embellished with lycra panels, structured busts and glove sleeves. Tailoring is also reinvented with a hyper-feminine vision of women. Wool jackets open wide to reveal cleavage on models, who parade fearlessly over pointed-toe pumps and stiletto-heeled sandals from Mugler’s latest footwear collection.
