Luxury French couture brand Dior launches its latest Fall 2023 men’s collection with references to ancient Egypt, the stars and the sky. Creative director Kim Jones takes us on a journey to Egypt’s Giza pyramids in the country’s capital, Cairo, and celebrates wanderlust.

Jones has chosen a dramatic location for his latest menswear collection and was inspired by Maison’s founder Christian Dior’s fascination with stars, symbols and traditions.

In celebration of the 75th anniversary, Jones entitles the collection “Guided By The Stars” to recall the story of Christian Dior finding the lucky star that convinced him to start his own Haute Couture house. “It was and is part of Dior lore – for both the man and the brand. It was Mr Dior’s tripping over his ‘lucky star’ – a literal object found on the Rue du Faubourg Saint – Honoré – that convinced him his destiny was to start his own haute couture house, a house frequently guided by his belief in astrology,” the brand explained.

Kim Jones said in an interview: “My interest in ancient Egypt is centred on the stars and the sky. It’s the fascination with the ancient world and the parallels with what we observe today; what we inherited from them and what we continue to learn from the past. It relates to Christian Dior in that sense and through his fascination with symbols and superstitions that recur throughout his work, one of which is the star. In both the collection and the show, there is the idea of “being guided by the stars”, and how that can imply many things. It’s about how the past shapes the future, or an idea of the future shapes the past”.

The Great Pyramids have been used as a mystical backdrop for this incredible collection, in which models have become “desert warriors out of a futuristic universe”.

The collection offered a wide range of Dior greys and energetic tones for the desert palette, “from the bright yellow of a zip-up jacket to a cardigan with an orange pyramid or the repetition of the Dior Oblique knitting technique”.

Taking lessons from the past and applying them to the present and future, the collection featured high-tech garments with footwear and accessories, combining functionality and haute couture. The fashion items in the collection included hoodies, mackintoshes, hiking boots and more. Leather goods reinterpreted luxury in a new organic utility. Footwear flirted with futurism and a touch of traditional craftsmanship. Haute couture combined masculinity and femininity while highlighting how completely connected our universe is.

“The majestic ancient pyramids of Giza as a backdrop, the nocturnal style of the desert highlights the experimentation and innovation at the heart of the collection, from the development of technical fabrics to art, such as tulle-like woven shirts that open a window into carefully crafted sports work with couture influences, to 3D printed Cannage patterns on the harness, helmets and hybrid shoes.
